SmoothyApp includes a free, open-source multicam tool for Premiere Pro. It analyzes activity on separate microphone tracks and uses your microphone-to-camera mapping to build a rough cut. Local multicam processing needs no account or Studio credits.
This article describes our own tool. It is not an independent ranking of every Premiere extension or a benchmark against competitors.
What automatic switching does
With synchronized cameras and separate microphones, the app can choose coverage based on which selected speaker is active. Minimum cut duration and hold settings help control rapid switching. An enabled wide camera can provide coverage for overlapping speech.
These are rough-cut decisions. A reaction shot, a visual demonstration or a deliberate pause may call for a different camera. Review the output instead of treating speaker activity as a finished editorial plan.
What you need
- The current SmoothyApp desktop release.
- Premiere Pro with the bundled SmoothyEdit CEP panel open.
- Synchronized source tracks visible in the sequence.
- A separate usable microphone track for each speaker you want mapped.
- A saved source project for review and comparison.
The downloads are for Apple Silicon Mac and Windows x64. A DaVinci Resolve bridge is not included. A mixed microphone recording does not give this tool separate speaker inputs.
Set up a first test
- Follow the Premiere connection guide.
- Open the intended source sequence and confirm its tracks appear in the app.
- Enable the cameras and map each microphone to the right camera.
- Choose conservative cut settings for a first pass.
- Run the tool and review the generated sequence.
The output is a new sequence from source media. Existing effects and titles are not copied. Use it before finishing, or plan to rebuild those elements on the reviewed rough cut.
Judge the result on your own footage
Watch for microphone bleed, quiet speakers, overlap and short interjections. Check picture and sound synchronization, especially at trimmed clips and later in a long recording. No percentage of correct cuts or fixed runtime applies to every source.
If you need a different workflow, compare candidates using a representative excerpt and your own requirements: separate-track support, handling of existing effects, output format, privacy, cost and review effort. Pricing and capabilities should be checked on the provider’s current site.
Where to go next
Read the detailed multicam setup walkthrough or visit the auto-multicam product page. For future recordings, use the separate-source handoff checklist so the edit begins with usable inputs.
